Turf Face Weight, Pile Height, and Backing Explained

Three specs come up on almost every turf product page. Knowing what they mean makes it much easier to compare options.
Face weight
Face weight measures how much yarn is packed into a square yard of turf — typically expressed in ounces. Higher face weight = denser, more durable turf. Pet and high-traffic turf usually starts at 70 oz+, while value-oriented landscape turf might be 45–60 oz.
Pile height
Pile height is the blade length above the backing — typically 1/2" to 2". Taller pile feels lusher but can mat. Shorter pile is better for putting, hitting, and high-traffic commercial.
Backing
The backing holds the tufts in place and (on pet turf) handles drainage. Polyurethane backings are common on commercial and nylon products; dual-layer perforated backings are standard on pet and landscape turf.
